I had a great dream last night that all my canaries were living in my dollhouse! It was great. I was feeding them bannana slices rolled in birdseed through an open window, and one of my birds was talking to me. Odd though that his voice was that of Bruce Springsteen, since I've only had one of his albums. It was clearly him and I can't remember what he was saying...
I took some quick pictures of Annie's little dinosaur sleeping in the master bed of my dollhouse after I saw these pictures on Flicker. They were protected so I couldn't slip one into this post. I think they are a perfect mix of animal+dollhouse+weird which I am drawn to.
Annie and I have gotten a huge kick out of the reading the author William Steig together. Years ago, my dear friend Cory lent us a few of his books and we were instantly in love. I especially love Caleb & Kate, The Amazing Bone, Pizza Pete, Gorky Rises, etc., etc. There is something so innocent and yet so sophisticated about his work that makes him one of my all time favorite kids authors. The image and "riddle" above are from his book CDC? and I find them hysterical! I will post one a week and I hope you get as big a tickle from them as I do.
We threw a spontaneous hot chocolate party this afternoon. We tidied the house, made a pot of yummy vegetable soup and laid out some reindeer cookies and a small cake before our guests arrived. Annie and I put on festive dresses and decided to go across the street and invite some of our elderly neighbors to share some holiday cheer with us. When we got home Jasper (our large shaggy dog) had eaten all the reindeer cookies and the whole cake! Ak!
Oh well! At least he had some holiday cheer.
The party was fine, there was plenty to enjoy. The photo above shows the small ornaments I made for our guests. Each one depicts one of our canaries.
Annie really enjoys taking care of her snake Cutie. She'll even pick up each little mouse by it's tail as she puts it in Cutie's line of sight for her weekly feedings. Annie took her out of her cage this morning and they hung out and spent some real quality time together. Only a few times did I have to help loosen Cutie's grip around Annie's little neck.
Annie read to her out of her favorite fantasy animal encyclopedia.
Cutie was in the bed, then on top of the bed. In the dollhouse, then behind the dollhouse. At that point I was called in to help untangle her because Cutie had gone out the dollhouse bedroom window and in through the front door. It would have made a great picture, but Cutie is so strong I needed both hands.
Our research went well yesterday, at the East Bay Vivarium and we are going forward with mating Cutie with our friend Yannai's snake Bino. If you are interested in taking one of the babies, let us know. I'll keep you posted in the meantime.
I was born on April 1st in Berkeley, California. I'm enjoying a life full of satisfaction and challenge alongside my dear friend and partner, Bill, and our almost twelve year-old daughter, Annie. We have a great house and garden that we share with two dogs, nine canaries, and three fire bellied toads. We are choosing a path of living that holds everyone's needs as precious and equal. We're loving an unschooling approach to education for Annie and ourselves. We're trying to live a life with the least amount of negative impact to the enviornment. One way we're doing that is we're really trying to be mindful about what we buy, how we travel, and how we care for ourselves. I will post my ideas, challenges, and celebrations for doing so on this blog. I would love to hear any of yours too!
