When each of my Mother-in-laws children got married, Billy and my marriage being the first, I painted her a small painting (12"x12") of the brides shoes. (My wedding shoes are the bottom one's.) Jane actually asked me if I would do that for her after she saw another shoe series I did way back in the 90's. You can see those '90's versions below.
Now, 15 years later, there is another wedding. Sara my youngest sister-in-law, is getting remarried after going through a divorce four years ago. The wedding is at the end of July. So here's the question. Do I gesso over the original painting to do the new version, or do I start over again with a new canvas? If so, do I just toss the painting?

Quite a conumdrum. When did you stop beating your husband? Better ask mom-in-law.
I think it may depend on her relationship with her ex. If it's a good one, then give her both, the old and a new canvas. If it's not so good, then I vote to gesso over the old one and paint a new one on top. The more layers in a painting the better, don't you think?
Your photos are pristine!!
Such artistic talent! I did not know you were a painter as well. I can see it runs in your family. What a sweet idea to paint these shoes for this reason. They are whimsical and endearing.
Hi, I have been following your blog for quite a while. I found it through Ulla's blog. I have never left a comment, but your question about the wedding shoe painting is very fascinating. Maybe you should ask the bride. It seems to be her call. Also I love your shoe painting and the many beautiful projects you have shown on your blog. Your daughter is so adorable. I enjoy your sharing tremendously. If you are interested check out my blog:

Hello Elizabeth and thank you for leaving a comment! I loved looking through your archives at your work and your dear family. I look forward to keeping up.

I don't know if I would toss?
A new one would be nice too.
i vote for painting a new one. . . you can take the old one down, but i wouldn't throw it away. unless it was a really horrible relationship, then maybe i'd paint on top of it!
Paint a new one!
Love the shoe series! Beautiful work!
